Vermilia - Poissa [Finland, 2017]

I saw them at Zobens un Lemess in Latvia a month ago, and while I would normally go hard for this type of music, Vermilia just... they just fucking sucked.

The BM parts sound good, but when you listen more closely to them you realise it's all just incredibly basic BM riffing without much in the way of interesting songwriting, and they only stand out because the rest isn't even mediocre. The vocalist, whose solo project this actually is (as our group discovered, chatting her up), can't stay in tune when she sings, whether due to lack of ability or because of supposedly folky, shamanistic songwriting, and that creates this jarring dissonance in most of their songs that just grated me so hard that I had to walk away.

And it's a real shame because their type of music is genuinely interesting, and the singer herself seemed like a great person with ambition. Which I support wholeheartedly. It just needs a lot of work before they can pull it off without being bad.
