Chase's 5/24 Rule Exceptions Mega Thread

Successful exception to 5/24 for Chase Freedom! Merry Christmas to me. My new Chase Freedom will be my 8th card in the past 24 months.

24-month Credit Card History:

  • Amazon store card 3/4/14 (Don’t make fun of me)
  • Barclaycard Apple 0% interest card 9/18/14
  • Amex PRG 5/9/15
  • United MileagePlus Explorer Business (Chase) 10/30/15
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred 12/3/15
  • Amex EveryDay 12/9/15
  • Citi AAdvantage Platinum 12/20/15
  • Chase Freedom 12/25/15

I applied for the CSP on 12/3 because at that point I was only at 4 cards in the past 24 months and I figured the 5/24 was hard and fast, no exceptions. Not wanting to pay the $195 AF on my PRG come May I also signed up for the EveryDay. I was targeted for the 60k AA miles with $3k spend on the Citi Platinum so I accepted.

I wanted to apply for the Freedom so I might be able to keep my Ultimate Rewards if I decide the $95 AF on the CSP isn’t worth it and at the rate I was going I knew it wouldn’t be a while before I would be able to apply with a legitimate 5/24 card profile. I don’t actually know what compelled me to apply for the Freedom, but I did and was instantly approved.

A few things to note which may have influenced my specific case:

  • The Amazon store card and Barclaycard may not have counted because I know for sure the Amazon card isn’t a “real” credit card i.e. can only be used at Amazon.com. The barclaycard can be used anywhere, but was obtained through Apple directly so it may not have “counted”.

  • Even if these two cards did count, the four most recent cards were applied for in the past month and they may not have been reflected on my credit report or something to the effect of that. Several applications in such a short, recent time period may have blinded them or something.

Either way, I’m super excited to have been approved for the Freedom because like the Amex Everyday and my Discover It there is no annual fee and thus no reason to get rid of the card ever. That should help with my AAOA over time.
