They just addressed the whole story and jokes to a completely different audience and they shitted on everything longtime fans liked.

They just mistreated all the old characters or killed them in the case of Maya and threw a lot of jokes that are addressed to a way younger audience. I am in my early thirties and Borderlands 3 showing me how less I know from modern pop kultur and their jokes just made me sad and feel bad

Being in my thirties (guess most players of Borderlands 1 are around their 30s at least, considering the game is about 15 years old) ,the game just made feel very very old. Like there are those tick tock villains that are just purely annoying. Than they also beat up the old cast, kill one of the characters I and many other where hyped to see right away (and that also for the sake of the next stupid annoying youngster with 0 character) it just makes you feel old and replaced.

And me explaining to new Borderlands fans about how hard it was back in the days to get a legendary makes me feel like that old man that told me how hard work was post war and how lazy and privileged I and my generation is
